vacation in Australia and New Zealand

Hi guys!

I need your help. I am from Germany and I will tavel to New Zealand in November 2010 and to Australia in January 2011 with my girl friend.

Maybe soemone can let me know where the good spots are and what I should think of. I am looking for spots mainly for Slalom.

I can not bring my equipment, so I need to find a nice dealer to rent gear. Maybe I can rent KA Sails and CA boards, what I would prefer.

In New Zealand I will stay 6 weeks and in Australia 4 weeks. Maybe this will change and I stay longer in both countries, but this is the plan now.

I want to visit both islands in New Zealand. In Australia I have a big question mark: west coast, east coast???

The great barrier reef is a must for me to dive and snorkel.

So I hope that you can help me out?

Thanks for helping me
Tim

Hi Tim

If your priority is windsurfing, my suggestion would be to start with three weeks in Western Australia. Perth can probably work ok for slalom but I would head up to Lancelin or Geraldton.
Here are some WA retailers: http://windsurfwa.com/WA/gear.html

Then fly over to Carins to do some diving on the reef for one week. If you are an experienced diver go for a overnight trip, the one day trips are often crowded and not as good. Pro Dive would be my choice: http://www.prodivecairns.com/
(If you have time also head up to Cape Tribulation, stunning!)

Then over to NZ! If you want to visit both islands and see as much as possible in 6 week here is my itinerary: Auckland - Bay of islands – Coromandel – Rotorua – Taupo - Taranaki – Wellington – Kaikoura – Christchurch – Wanaka - Queens town - Milford Sounds. Definitely enough time to squeeze in some great windsurfing!

Not sure about rentals in NZ but these retailers can probably help: http://www.windsurf.co.nz/windsurf_retailers.asp

Whatever you decide, you will have a great trip!

Hi Tim,

The East Coast of Aus has some awesome windsurfing spots too! Just depends on whether you are going to West Coast or East Coast Aus.

If you are heading to the East Coast, look me up and I can steer you in the right direction!

Hi guys!

Thank you so much for helping me.
Seems that you guys are really nice.

I will read everything carefully and try to find out, what I will do.
First I will go to NZ and than to Australia. Friends of mine have been close to Perth at Coronation Beach for Kiting for 3 weeks. They liked it a lot.

Where can I find the best weather forecast fot Australia and NZ. Windfinder or windguru oder local forecast stations?

Thanks
Tim

Just one thing that I want to know:

I need a car in Australia and in NZ, of course. I wanted to rent a camping car, but with the most camping cars it is difficult to take some windsurfing gear with me and my girl friend.

Any idea how I should do it?

Cheers
Tim

I have never rented a camper van so cant help you but if you hire an older car from a small local company I dont think it will be a problem. You can probably get better answers if you post these kind of questions to a travel forum like www.backpack-newzealand.com, www.backpackerboard.co.nz or similar sites

good luck!
