Hi, it really comes down to the water state, what conditions are you sailing in ?

Cheers, James

You would love the Sl52 with a Venom 30 .I,m 83kg and this is a great allround board. I haven,t tried the Ca 53 but the 50 is great in a straight line and handles the chop well, but doesn,y jybe well. (It is a speed board)

The Sl 52 will take a 7.5 to 5 sail with 34 to a 28 fin and so far in flat water i,ve pushed this board to a 39.8 peak and of course the 553kn in 24hrs record. When ever i lend this board out i struggle to get it back because people like it so much. Handles chop very well and is great for laydown jybes . If i had to have only one board this would be it. Have a demo if you can

5.0 to 7.5! ? a tiny bit of hype there!!! I can maybe see a 7.5 working in ideal conditions, smooth water and steady wind of just the right amount with no slogging, but one is going to be very unhappy otherwise (I did put some time ago a 6.5 twin cam on a Starboard Acid 74, and it did work, so to speak but it would be very deceiving to claim that an Acid 74 can use 3.5 to 6.5!).

In my experience the best sail for the 52 is somewhere between 5.5 and 6.0, not too well with a 5.1. It is very small. forget the volume, the footprint is tiny, but does not seem to like a very small sail.

For speed I am sure you can break 40knots in flat water, any slalom board can do that: by far the limiting factor is water conditions. Example? Pritchard got close to 35knots on a Futura 121, that is actually quite scary!!!!!! http://www.star-board.com/AutumnW...1/news_events/read.php?threadid=9556

I would suggest maybe Manta 54, CA 55, Isonic 80: you'd go the same top speed and have a much more usable board.

Hi guys,

I guess it also depends what you want to use the board for most of the time. If it's mostly free-racing with the occasional speed run, I'd say go for the SL52 for sure. I'd only suggest a dedicated speed board if that's what you will mostly be doing: downwind speed runs in flat water. That being said, the speed boards jibe quite well - in fact I have no problems planing through my jibes on even the SP44 - but it remains a speed boards; that's what they are made for, and that's what they excel in.

As for what a particular board "can" and "cannot" do, I suppose there is always an element of subjectivity. I can only say that my buddies in the south of France (Gruissan, Leucate, etc) absolutely adore the SL52, and as James can attest after last year's edition of the Defi WInd, it can get pretty windy down there!

As for its sail range, again there's a slightly subjective element there, but surely the SL52 can be sailed effectively with sails at least from 5.0 to 6.5.

So in all: if you're looking for a high wind board that will go fast, is easy to use and can handle different conditions, I'd recommend the SL52 as well.

Cheers,

Chris

Sorry Davide no hype 7.5-5 with Venoms 34-30 . Its what was used for the 24hr as my 110l AB had a smashed fin box from hitting a tree. Try adjusting your board angle to fly the board across the chop. This has worked for me in open ocean before. As for small boards the 52 is big for me,try a Ca40 thats small but huge fun, even in chop. Haven,t tried the Mantas, loved the 55 but the isonics have the footstraps too far apart for me. Distance session http://www.gpsteamchallenge.com/s...ion/show?date=2010-11-30&team=16
Photo is a 7.5 Koncept on a Sl 52 with a 34 Venom.

Try using a 118 Starboard as a speed board and stock fin....the record is a 40kt+ 10 sec run

Hi GR 106
Based on my experience from the places we most sail , I would recomend you an SL 52 and or SL 55.
You can have really very good gps figures and the same time you can enjoy the free race you are asking for . As James said it all depends on the water conditions . The SL 53 is a very special board for rundowns .You could for sure use it in Karpathos in the summer and occationally in front of Aeollos club with very strong N wind of force +7
With respect to all CA riders answers
