Is something missing ?
Now that is summer, do you think that something is missing in the lineup between the 80 and the formula ?
I was thinking about something like the JP super lightwind, a super light board btw 80 and 100cm wide with a lot of volume and easy like a slalom board with the aim to get planning as fast as possible with a sail btw 9 and 11m.
In your opinion is it useful or not ?

You should get in contact with James.
I was thinking the same thing late last year. After looking at a Formula but wanting more flexibility James offered to do a custom Slalom. With the advantage of CAD James was able to take the CA slalom shape and scale it up. After placing the order I received a 3D QTime movie of my board that afternoon! We made a couple of tweaks and then it was off to the CNC for shaping. I am now the proud owner of a custom Carbon Art SL90.

Wow that is very impressive !
Let us know how the board feels on the water ...
Which kind of fin and sail will you use and what are the volume and the OFO of the board ?
Nice to know that we can have a custom but i'm afraid about the resale value of custom boards, I think they should launch a CA90 there is a definetely a market for that !!!
Please report your first impressions, pictures of the board would be greatly appreciated !

And James : please launch such a board in the range

The only downside that I see is that a SL90 would not be allowed to enter slalom competitions held under the ISAF/PWA rules which allow boards only up to 85cm of width (see for IFCA: http://www.sailing.org/tools/documents/FUN2009CR150509-%5B7308%5D.pdf).

Yes of course the board would be only for recreational purpose but I'm sure there is a market for such a board because the formula are very technical boards for the average sailer and they feel really big. I'm sure that a board around 90cm with a lot of volume and a good lenght would be perfect for the average sailer who wants an easy early planning board !

HI Steph,
I guess we could add a 90 to the range but where do we stop? our SL 80 will get planing in super light winds for most, I would prefer to do these sort of requests as custom orders, as it's such a specific request I don't really think resale is an issue, you just keep it for it's intended purpose.
We have done a few customs when requested but only keen if we cannot supply one of our productions models to suit, for example at present we are building a custom speed and slalom board for an 8 year old which is quite a cool project.

Well, I can only confirm what James said re the SL80; I had my best races on it in Germany last year in the lightest of conditions (11 knots...) with 8.4. While it is true that I'm rather on the light side, I also had the smallest sail of all (others were on 9+ sails).

I think James is right. Keep the model range as it is. Nice and simple. I think with CA's philosophy of working working direct with the customer they dont need to. How many models do Starboard have now ?
Steph, the board works great. It turns effortlessly and is perfectly balanced. I have a 58cm cut down Formula blade from Chris Ting at VMG which I use with a 10m sail. In higher winds I use a 7.6 with the same fin. I am pretty heavy so I get away with it!
Re resale. Given the beachside interest I dont think it would be a problem. To most they assume its a normal CA board. I agree with your comment on the re-sale value of customs but that's only when the shaper or brand isnt well known. And James is also right, I dont ever envisage selling this one. It addresses an issue that wont ever go away... Light winds!
