Best windsurfing locations New Zealand??

Hi guys and girls,

I am planning to live in New Zealand for a year. We (my girl friend and I) are currently looking for the best place to live. And I would like to do some serious windsurfing. This means proper waves with sideshore conditions

I know that Taranaki is probably the best place, but to work it doesn't seem the easiest place. Can anybody give me an advice on an second best location, close to a bigger city?

So far we have looked at Auckland, Wellington and Nelson. Are there proper wave saing conditions around these cities?

All advice is more then welcome!!

Hope to see you soon out there!

Best regards,
Niels (Amsterdam, the Netherlands)

Hi Niels - if you're after waves then Taranaki is definitely the place to be. Work wise I guess it's what you are looking for but there is stuff around.
Auckland...waves? not really!
Wellington...some waves? Haven't sailed there myself but it seems they get some kinda wavey conditions - they sure have got the wind! There are a some keen wavesailors in both Akld and Welly that appear in Taranaki when there is a good report...so if you end up in the 'big cities' I'd recommend making friends (beer seems to work quite well for this ) with them for weekend road trips.

See you when you get here
