Larger speedboards?

Hi guys,

I've heard some rumours and also seen that Chris is using larger speedboards sometimes (sp60 & sp53) and from what I've told there should be a sp53 available soon? Ok, I know the basics but what would the main differences be between a sp53 and sl55 (or sl52), when will the speedboard be faster - in flatter water (of course it will) but how about chop etc. When should you choose the bigger speedboard instead of a small slalomboard?
Btw, anybody tried the sp47 with 7.0 and would like to share some experince?

I don't own the SP47 but have used my 7.5 on the SP50 and the board handles the sail ease, wind was around 17knots and the board popped onto to the plane in the lulls i was swimming but my weight is 98kg.
Other sailors have used 6.6m on the SP40 so all the boards can carry bigger rigs but it all depends on the conditions and you weight.

Yes, there is a SP 53 coming up that Chris has been testing but for bigger than the 53 you should look at the SL62 as a light wind option. I believe it will get the final touch in the next couple of weeks

I quote James:

"Chris was testing the SP53 using a 7.5 in conditions that he would normally want a SL70 and 8.5 so can't wait to hear what it's like when powered on the 7.5. First impressions are smooth and fast, coping with chop well, he said the sea state was horrible, "confused chop" also very confident gybing."

Choppy and horrible sea state sounds like the typical Swedish speed run

Hi guys, just discovered the forum. Cool.

I've been testing the SP53 proto in a range of conditions the past few weeks. So far its working great. Similar float to the SP50 (maybe a tad more), but has a lower ride at speed. The nose rocker is the same as the SP44 so its a little lower than the SP50. Craig Spottiswood borrowed it last time I was at Sandy Point (and didnt give it back for a while) getting 44kts on it the first run! I watched some of his runs on it and the trim was great. I got a Pt Walter (Perth) PB on it last week with a 41.5kt run, so its definitely not slow. It gybes a lot easier in chop than the SP50, and the ride is very smooth in lumpy water. I really like it so far. Hopefully I'll get to sail it some more tomorrow. There hasnt been a lot of wind here in the past few months- very frustrating.

Chris

Hi

Recently started riding a SL58 from 2006 and very impressed by how easy to sail - narrowest and lowest volume board I've sailed - and fastest!

Now thinking about something even smaller - possibly a speed board to optimise on 5m8.

The boards in the series appear to have evolved individually - Chris L mentions that the SP53 nose rocker is similar to that of the SP44 & lower than the SP50; superficially the SP50 and SP53 would appear to be very similar - but clearly the SP53 has greater sail carrying capacity etc ...

Without giving too many secrets away - would it be possible to sketch out each board's design goals and "launch date" somewhere on the site (didn't there use to be more specifications on the site?)?

Much appreciated - Martin

Hi guys...

I was thinking getting me a speedboard...I really like the idea of a larger one.
There where I am the most of the year I got lucky when I can go for speed with 7.5 so more or less all the other speedboards are way too small.

The question on SP53 is...is it really 56cm wide or is an error on the web and it is only 53?
And how does it handle chop (let´s say up to 0.5m)...meaning doing speed runs not close to the beach but on an open water?

Thanks,
ciao Michal.

OK - I've found the pdf with specifications, and searched back on the SPs' release dates: ~Oct 2006 - SP44, SP50 & SP68(?); ~April 2007 - SP47 & SP60; and, ~ June 2008 - SP40. Thanks

I live in Perth and see Chris quite often. the 53 has a lower nose than the 50 and rides quite flat but seems to handle small chop without difficulty. Chris has been using it a lot in fairly choppy conditions and getting 40+ speeds consistently but maybe not the full on chop you are talking about.

He used it towards the end of the worlds at Karpathos with a 7.8 and got a 3rd in one leg.

He has been getting most of his PBs in Perth on it. He even did a 43kn peak speed the other day in conditions no one else could get over 37.5

Of course it would be better if he answered your question himself and when he has time hopefully he will be able.

cheers

dave

Hi, Im on SB iS speed 44 & 53. I'm tempted to try the CA44 & 53. Any one tried the SB and CA and what differences could I get?

Thanks

Hi Mark:
I can't really help you with a SB/CA comparison, but I can say that the SP44 is an awesome speed board; super control and an amazing speed potential. It has an amazing range too - at my weight (72kg) I can easily take it out below 20 knots!
Hope this helps,
c

Hello guys,

I'm looking more and more on a speed board to go with 7,0 and 8,0 but I'm 115kgs and I'm wondering if it is wise or not.

I already have a CA62 and it's very fine but would like something faster for some special speed sessions on flat water.

Would the SP53 be a good choice or Should I forget it, at least with 8,0 ?

Regards

I haven’t had the chance to try the SP53 yet but lots of the Swedish speed sailors are really exited and love the board. They have mainly been using it with 7.8 to 6.0 with 6.2-7.2 as the sweet spot.
