Fin suggestion for sl62

Hi guys,

I've a Venom 36 for the SL62 but I kind of have a feeling that the fin is too small for (7,0 -) 7,8? So for that reason I'm looking for a bigger fin, but in what size and brand do you suggest?

If it matters I'm about 75kg...

Best regards,
Tobias

Hi Tobias

I'm about your weight and had some considerable 'tow' on the SL62 with Venom fins. The 36 is definitely too small. You need to put at least 40cm and for 7.6 I'd even recommend 42cm. I had really good results with that combo last year.

Cheers

Hi Tobias,

For this board, you can go big with Venom ! 40 or 42 for 7.6/7.8. 38 for 6.7. You can try perhaps your 36 on flat water with 6.3.

Hi, I used my SL 62 past Summer with a 36 Falcon and a 38 Tomcat. Used the Falcon with a 6.6 TR-5 when fully powered, but the Tomcat felt nice as well with the same sail, no control issues at all. The Tomcat was my only choice with 7.0 TR-4 and 7.6 TR-5, the latter could probably have been nice with a 40 in lower winds.
That said, since the Venom is said to need 2 cms. more than usual, I'd go for 40 and 42 with your sail sizes.

Thanks for your replies guys.
Chris have you tried any other fins (brand) with the SL62?
I've the SL55 and i totally rocks with the Venom 32-34 so I want to have that same feeling with the SL62 - in other worlds is the Venom the "right" choice here or should a look at another brand?

Hi Tobhed (love that name btw):

Not wanting to kick in open doors here (as in: there is no 'right' choice etc) - we all know that - but obviously if you want to have the same feeling as on your SL55 a Venom 42 is the way to go with your 7.8.

That combo (SL62/venom42/7.6) is stupidly fast and easy. I used it in our first slalom of the season last year taking first place, and used it again in the final heat of the IFCA Europeans when the wind picked up to 20-25knots and scored a 4th place, my best result in the championships. For me as a rather light weight the venoms offer the best control/speed combination I've been able to put my hands on so far; with the venoms I can just add those critical couple of knots to the upper range of my set-up.

I have tried other fins (MFC for instance) which work fine with the SL62 but just didn't provide the smoothness and speed of the venoms.

You're right, he SL55 & venom 34 is fantastic. By the way, if I'm not mistaken it's what James used on the first day of the US Nationals in the Gorge last year to nearly annihilate everyone on the course

Let us know if you've more questions.

cheers

Thanks Chris, I'll go for Venom 40 & 42. Will be interesting to test it as soon as all the ice and snow have disappeared.

Cheers,
Tobhed

Hi Tobias

I have used the Venom 38 as the basic everyday fin for my SL62 combined with a 7.5-7.0 but for +7.5 you can easily go up to 40 or even 42. I have also sailed the SL 62 with a Tectonics Goldwing 36 and even a 34 custom fin when really powered up with a 6.5. In these conditions your Venom 36 will kick ass but with a SL 55 you will probably switch board instead of fin

Spring is nowhere in sight, -7.5 C in Stockholm this morning…

Cheers / Petter

Hi Tobias
I have to agree with Peter ,ie for every day use a 38 size will be great ,for wind force to early 5 bf;s. I do though have to mention that due to your weight and for sails up to 7.5 m2 , I wouldnot recommend you to go for a bigger size .I am riding my sl 62 pro with 7.0-7.5 m sails using Deboichet custom fins SL2 ,38 cm and SL4 36cm ,and feels superb and very fast all the times .( I weigh 90 kg ) With sail 6.0-6.5 m2 I am using fin sizes 34 cm (Deboichet and /or Tectonics falcon1) . Have tried Venon 36 but I find it heavy in comparison with the Deboichet ones. In force reaching almost 6 bf;s have easily reached 32 knots measured with a GT-31 GPS . We have nice winds these days and have not felt cold yet . All the best from Greece .

A little caveat: if you want to compare a Venom fin to another slalom fin you generally have to add 2cm at least - hence the bigger sizes I recommended for Venoms.

I've had very good results with those fins in those lengths, but I'm sure the board will perform equally well with other fins.

I also tried the Venom 36 with SL 62 and 6.6 TR5. Found the Venom was too small for that combination and lacked drive upwind. Reverted back to using Techtonics 38. I am approx 83 kg. Have yet to try Venom with 5.9 TR5 but expect that will be a better combo on the 58.
